Syringe Services Programs
The Syringe Services Program (SSP) is a harm-reduction, evidence based intervention that encourages injection drug users to reduce the harm in their lives through a variety of options.
The SSP offers people who inject drugs a safe way to dispose of used hypodermic needles. This helps to reduce the transmission of blood borne diseases like HIV and Hepatitis C, and reduce the number of needles discarded in the community.
In CT, the law allows pharmacies to sell up to ten syringes over the counter without a prescription. Not all pharmacies/pharmacists do this, however, so it’s best to call ahead.
AIDS Connecticut's SSP offers free naloxone/Narcan™ and overdose response education. Please call or visit one of our sites (phone numbers and schedules below) to learn more about this program.
ACT staff also offer Harm Reduction and Overdose Response trainings to individuals and community groups. To arrange a training please contact Shawn M. Lang at 860-247-2437 x319 or email email@example.com.
Hartford Syringe Services Program
In Hartford, SSP services are provided from a mobile van that operates in Hartford's South and North end neighborhoods five days per week. Services are offered during morning and afternoon hours. In addition to syringe exchange, the SSP provides HIV testing, risk reduction counseling, harm reduction education, drug treatment advocacy and safer sex kits. SSP staff also refer clients to drug treatment programs, medical providers and social service agencies. The Hartford SSP is responsible for removing more than 200,000 used needles from the streets of Hartford and its surrounding towns each year.
